For our prospect match-ups this weekend we travel out west where the air show of Washington State takes on Stanford, a top five pass defense in the PAC 12.

Stanford and Washington State face off in what’s an important battle from the PAC 12 North.  This amounts to an elimination game for the division title as both teams must still face one loss Washington in the coming month.

The battle here lies between the Washington State air game and Stanford pass defense.

After a blistering start to the season Luke Falk’s game has come back down to earth.  During the first six games which included an upset victory over USC, Falk was near 70% completion percentage on throws with 19 TDs and just 2 interceptions.

Then came a loss to Cal where Falk threw five picks, followed by 50% passing and 178 yards against Colorado and just 93 passing yards during the loss to Arizona.

This weekend he’ll face a stern Stanford secondary, one which can dominate opponents yet has also shown a lot of inconsistency this season.

Cornerbacks Quenton Meeks and Alijah Holder, both juniors, are highly rated prospects who figure in the draft’s second day should they opt to enter.  Both offer good size, speed and ball skills.  Holder is a little more physical but has more trouble making plays with his back to the ball.  Edit- Holder did injure a knee last week and his availability this week is doubtful.

Safety Justin Reid, another underclassman, flashes skill but also a lot of inconsistency and coverage breakdowns.

Washington State’s offensive system usually leads to wide open receivers around the field.  The Cardinal defense must get pressure on Falk, whose accuracy and ability to place passes rival any of the top rated quarterbacks expected to be eligible for next April’s draft.  The Stanford secondary must also keep the action in front of them and keep their heads on the proverbial swivel.

Otherwise it will be a long afternoon.
