Bio:
First-year starter who earned Third Team AP All-America honors and made 44 tackles (5.5 for loss) with 3.5 sacks and four pass breakups as a junior. Started five games and recorded 39 tackles (6.5 for loss), five sacks and one forced fumble in 2016. Posted 17 tackles (three for loss), one sack and one forced fumble as a redshirt freshman.
Pos:
Athletically gifted big man with tremendous upside. Fires off the snap with an explosive first step, fights with his hands and plays with terrific pad level. Consistently gets leverage on opponents and displays good change of direction and lateral speed in pursuit of plays from the back side. Plays with suddenness and strength and defeats blocks to get to the action. Consistently double teamed but holds his ground. Fundamentally sound and works his hands throughout the action.
Neg:
Easily handled by lesser opponents and sealed from the action too often. Intensity and consistency run hot and cold. Lacks top balance and often can be found on the turf.
Analysis:
Vea offers tremendous natural skills and flashes the ability to take over games when he wants to. He has possibilities to line up in a multitude of defensive schemes but must start to do the little things well on a consistent basis if he wants a career at the next level.
