Bio:
One-year starter who earned Third Team All-MAC honors despite missing the first five games after undergoing foot surgery before the season. Caught 35 passes for 504 yards and five touchdowns and earned an invitation to the Senior Bowl in 2017. Made 42 receptions for 560 yards and six TDs as a junior.
Pos:
Relatively athletic pass-catching tight end with nice upside. Agile, athletic and has a basketball background. Runs solid routes, extends his hands and displays solid hand-eye coordination. Easily adjusts to errant throws, comes away with difficult receptions and makes over-the-shoulder catches down the field. Finds the open spot in the defense, knows how to separate from opponents and easily tracks the pass in the air. Exposes himself to big hits in order to come away with difficult receptions and competes to make catches. Stays square, bends his knees and gives effort blocking.
Neg:
Possesses average blocking strength. Times well in the 40 but does not show a true downfield burst.
Analysis:
Conklin entered his senior season with high expectations from scouts but was sidelined for a large part of the campaign with injuries. He performed well during Senior Bowl practices and displayed himself as a consistent pass catcher and willing blocker. He has the ability to start off as a second tight end in the NFL and the tools to eventually develop into a starter if coached properly.
