Bio:
One-year starter who made 38 tackles (3.5 for loss) as a junior. Made seven starts and led Georgia with 9.5 tackles for loss while matching the team lead with five sacks and adding 56 tackles in 2016. Recorded 25 tackles as a true freshman.
Pos:
Quick, explosive one-gap tackle. Plays with great pad level, gets leverage on opponents and holds his ground against blocks. Fires off the snap with a terrific first step, works his hands and displays good change of direction. Moves well laterally, covers a good amount of area on the field and has a solid closing burst. Shows an array of moves to get off blocks and nicely redirects to ball carriers.
Neg:
Lack of bulk will hinder him at the next level. Has a long injury history. Marginal strength at the point of attack.
Analysis:
Thompson is an explosive defensive tackle prospect best as a three-technique. Health and size are concerns but if he hits on all cylinders, Thompson could start at the next level.
