Bio:
Two-year starter who was named CIAA Offensive Player of the Year and led the conference with 18 rushing touchdowns while pacing Virginia State with 1,214 rushing yards on 168 carries and catching 18 passes for 203 yards and two scores in 2017. Led the team with 174 carries, 1,174 rushing yards and nine rushing TDs as a junior. Walked on at Virginia State after transferring from Shepherd University.
Pos:
Explosive skill player who picks up big chunks of yardage as both a ball carrier and a return specialist. Quick through the hole, runs with lean and has a tremendous burst of speed. Dangerous if given the slightest bit of open space, beats defenders into the open field and runs to daylight. Fast in a straight line and laterally, displays vision and works runs. Keeps his feet moving on contact, uses an effective straight arm and breaks arm tackles. Keeps plays in bounds and works to pick up positive yardage. Home run-hitting threat as a return specialist and shows the ability to take it the distance. Follows blocks as a ball carrier and as a kick returner.
Neg:
Not a natural pass catcher. Often clutches receptions against his frame and does too much body catching. Not a big-bodied back.
Analysis:
Cannon is a physically gifted skill player who can be used as a rotational ball carrier and return specialist. He needs to improve his pass catching, but his ability to alter the momentum of games with big kick returns is very attractive.
