Top-10 Mock Draft

With one-quarter of the NFL season in the books, it’s time to consider a mock draft -- for the first ten selections anyway. Below is a random selection of teams with the worst records in the league after four games coupled with how I believe they may fall in by season's end.

1

Arizona Cardinals

Ed Oliver

DT

Houston

Analysis: Oliver is the top player on our board, and while we prefer putting an offensive lineman in this spot, the Houston underclassman is head and shoulders above any blocker we expect to be available next April.

2

New York Giants

Nick Bosa

DE

Ohio State

Analysis: Except for the skill positions and safety, the Giants need help in most every area. Like last April, they take the best player available.

3

Buffalo Bills

Rashan Gary

DE-Edge

Michigan

Analysis: Another spot I would prefer to put a left tackle or a skill player. Considering Gary’s potential and the age of Jerry Hughes, this makes too much sense.

4

New York Jets (via Houston Texans)

Greg Little

OT

Mississippi

Analysis: I’m tempted to put one of the higher-rated pass rushers in this spot, but if the Jets want Sam Darnold to be the centerpiece of the franchise, they better protect him.

5

San Francisco 49ers

Greedy Williams

CB

LSU

Analysis: I don’t know that Williams is top-five material, but he’s a talented corner who’s shown improvement in his game this season.

6

Oakland Raiders

Clelin Ferrell

DE

Clemson

Analysis: There’s a lot of ways the Raiders could go in the draft, but replacing some of the impact they lost in Khalil Mack is imperative.

7

Indianapolis Colts

David Edwards

OT

Wisconsin

Analysis: The first semi-surprise. Everything I heard all summer, and news which I reported, told me area scouts believe Edwards is a top-15 pick. Edwards is what teams want in a tackle today: big, strong, athletic and versatile. Even though the Colts took offensive linemen early and often last April, there’s still a need.

8

Detroit Lions

A.J. Brown

WR

Mississippi

Analysis: Any highly rated defensive lineman would be a consideration for the Lions, but Golden Tate’s best days are behind him while Marvin Jones is closing in on 30 and has a potential out in his contract after the season.

9

Houston Texans

Raekwon Davis

DT

Alabama

Analysis: An offensive lineman or cornerback is strong consideration, but Davis is a dominant defensive lineman with a great upside.

10

Cleveland Browns

Dre'Mont Jones

DT

Ohio State

Analysis: Christian Wilkins is strong consideration in this spot, but his inconsistent play the past year and a half scares me. Jones is a terrific pass rusher who will grow into a stout run defender.
