Bio:
Spent one season at Purdue after leaving Western Kentucky as a graduate transfer and made 69 tackles (six for loss) with three sacks in 2017. Two-year starter for the Hilltoppers who was named Honorable Mention All-Conference USA in each of those seasons. Recorded 85 tackles (four for loss), one forced fumble and three pass breakups as a junior. Led the team with 106 tackles and 11.5 tackles for loss and added three sacks, one forced fumble, one interception and three PBUs in 2015. Left UAB after his freshman season when the school temporarily shut down its football program.
Pos:
Hard-working linebacker with poor size and speed and limited upside. Effectively reads and diagnoses the action, does not bite on ball fakes and stays with coverage assignments. Fluid moving laterally and quickly locates the ball and gets outside the numbers to make plays in space. Strong, defeats blocks to get to the action and wraps up tackling.
Neg:
Not a great athlete. One-speed linebacker. Gets caught up in the trash.
Analysis:
After a solid career at Western Kentucky, McCollum transferred to Purdue and played reasonably well in 2017. He possesses average size and poor speed but shows explosion and instincts, which could make him an intriguing prospect this summer.
