Pos:
Tremendous pass-catching tight end with a developing game. Gives effort as a blocker, plays with great pad level and stays square. Fires off the snap into blocks, shows ability as a position blocker and possesses outstanding vision. Fluidly releases off the line of scrimmage, quickly gets into pass routes and always finds the soft spot in the defense to make himself an available target. Uses his frame to protect the pass, extends his hands and makes the reception away from his body. Tough, keeps the play in bounds after the catch and works to pick up as much yardage as possible. Play smart, heads-up football and does not shy away from contact. Easily makes the reception on crossing patterns, looks the ball into his hands and turns upfield. Displays good route discipline.
Neg:
One-speed tight end who really doesn't show a great burst. Despite his effort, lacks great strength as a blocker.
Analysis:
Hockenson often takes a backseat to teammate Noah Fant, but he was the better Hawkeyes tight end in 2018 and moves towards the draft as a top player at the position. He possesses the size, athleticism and growth potential to develop into a starter and a three-down tight end, and I would expect Hockenson to immediately produce as a rookie in the league.
