Bio:
Two-year starter who earned Second Team All-Big Ten honors and led Indiana with 12.5 tackles for loss in 2017, tying for the team lead with six sacks, making 89 tackles and intercepting two passes. Named Third Team All-Big Ten and led the nation with 23.5 tackles for loss as a junior, finishing first on the team with 126 tackles and seven sacks and intercepting one pass. Started one game and posted 64 tackles (5.5 for loss), three sacks, two interceptions and four pass breakups in 2015. Made 46 tackles (4.5 for loss) with two sacks and three interceptions as a true freshman.
Pos:
Tough, run-defending linebacker with average size. Breaks down well, remains disciplined with assignments and quickly locates ball carriers. Uses his hands to protect himself. Aggressive and rarely off his feet. Scrapes well laterally, squares into ball carriers and wraps up at the point of attack. Displays solid range out to the flanks in pursuit of the action. Effectively reads and diagnoses plays.
Neg:
Lacks top pursuit speed for a smaller linebacker. Shows average ball skills and struggles in coverage, even when the play is in front of him.
Analysis:
Scales was a stout run defender at the college level and comes with a special-teams mentality. He could backup on the inside of a 3-4 defense but is a prospect who must stand out on special teams this summer.
