Bio:
Three-year starter who earned Second Team All-Pac-12 honors in 2016 after finishing second in FBS with seven interceptions, making 63 tackles and breaking up 16 passes. Named Honorable Mention All-Pac-12 as a junior after ranking third on the team with three interceptions and adding 63 tackles. Made 56 tackles with three INTs in 2014 before a concussion ended his season after eight games.
Pos:
Aggressive run-defending safety with average size and speed numbers. Explosive, fast up the field and displays a closing burst. Chases hard to get involved in the action, moves well laterally and shows the ability to get outside the flanks to make plays. Lays it on the line sacrificing his body to defend the run and squares into ball carriers then wraps up. Remains disciplined with assignments, recognizes the action and works to defend the throw.
Neg:
Possesses average ball skills. Slow getting his head back around to locate the pass. Usually a half-step late in pass coverage. Occasionally gets sucked up the field and caught out of position.
Analysis:
Best playing downhill, Thompson is a strong safety prospect who plays bigger than his listed size. His mentality and aggressiveness will be an asset on special teams.
