Bio:
Three-year starter named First Team All-AAC in both 2015 and 2016. Made 67 tackles (18.5 for loss) with 5.5 sacks as a senior after posting 62 tackles (15 for loss) and two sacks as a junior. Sophomore totals include 47 tackles (6.5 for loss) and two sacks.
Pos:
Tough, productive defensive tackle who projects as a three-technique player at the next level. Built low to the ground, plays with excellent pad level and consistently gets leverage on opponents. Explodes off the snap with a tremendous first step and nicely redirects to the action or quickly alters his angle of attack. Effectively uses his hands and displays a terrific arm-over move as well as other techniques to protect himself or get off blocks. Quick-footed, makes plays on the ball or sets the edge to create opportunities for linebackers. Displays a burst in every direction and plays smart, tough football. Does more than just mindlessly pin his ears back and rush up the field.
Neg:
Lacks bulk and strength and is easily disrupted from the action by the initial hit. Struggled against larger and more talented opponents during Senior Bowl practices.
Analysis:
Smart was a productive lineman three years running at Tulane, lining up in both three- and four-man fronts. He has size limitations but if used properly, he can start at the next level.
