Three-year starter who earned All-American recognition and was named First Team All-Pac-12 as both a sophomore and a junior. Made 39 tackles (2.5 for loss) with three interceptions in 2016. Posted 46 tackles (3.5 for loss), four interceptions, four forced fumbles and 10 pass breakups in 2015. Started 12 games as a true freshman and recorded 61 tackles (2.5 for loss) with two interceptions. Suffered a serious Achilles’ injury at his March pro day.
Dominant shutdown cornerback who must now rebound from a devastating injury suffered during his pro-day workout. Quick transitioning off the line, plays much faster than his 40 time and easily runs downfield with opponents. Aggressive, mixes it up with receivers throughout the route and fights to defend throws. Stays on the receiver’s hip out of breaks, effectively times his pass defenses and gets vertical to knock the ball away. Consistently gets his head back around and tracks the pass in the air. Stays with receivers on crossing patterns, picks up assignments and willingly defends the run.
Lacks great closing burst and doesn’t explode out of his plant. Does too much side shuffling rather than backpedaling. Average computer numbers on paper.
Prior to the Achilles’ injury that Jones suffered during the March 11 pro day at Washington, he was rated as our top cornerback and a top-12 pick. He possesses the ball skills to start at the next level yet is now a question mark due to the severity of his injury and the recovery time necessary.
