Shrine Game Practice - Final Notes & Player Rankings

Tony Pauline
Draft Analyst WriterThe practices are complete, the scouts have left St. Petersburg and all that remains is to kick off the 2019 Shrine Game. As we close the book on this year’s event, here are a few exiting notes as well as final player rankings from the three days of practice.
- Several offensive linemen impressed NFL scouts last week, and one who really stood out but didn’t get many headlines was James Pipkins of Sioux Falls. We mentioned the big tackle during our podcast on Tuesday, and I was hearing mid-round grades after the practices were complete. Teams mentioned the lack of talent at offensive tackle in this year’s draft and how a developmental left tackle prospect like Pipkins, who measured 6-foot-5.5 and 304 pounds, will be very attractive on draft weekend.
- During our final podcast from practice, I mentioned how impressed I was with Brody Oliver, the receiver from Colorado School of Mines. I was not alone, as many people I spoke with felt Oliver, who measured 6-foot-2.5 and 208 pounds with 10-inch hands, rivaled KeeSean Johnson and Cody Thompson for the top receiver on the West the final two days of practice.
- Staying on the offensive side of the ball, scouts and general managers are complaining this will be one of the worst drafts for prospects from the scoring side of the ball in a long time. Right now, they project as many as 70 of the top 100 players drafted coming from the defensive side of the ball.
- There was a lot of anger at the Shrine Game from scouts, league personnel and even agents over the record number of underclassmen who entered the draft. We reported during our podcast of January 10 about misinformation given to underclassmen to sway their decisions, including telling players they received third-round grades when nothing of the sort was true. I was also informed that underclassmen were encouraged to enter the draft based on the possibility of an NFL work stoppage in the near future. Part of the anger stems from deserving seniors potentially losing a coveted invitation at the upcoming combine. KeeSean Johnson was a mentioned as a potential casualty, as he’s yet to receive a combine invite and is one of the many deserving seniors on the bubble who will have to wait it out until invitations are sorted to the declared underclassmen. Many remedies were proposed by people at the Shrine Game, including severely restricting the number of underclassmen invited to the combine in order to make a statement; something I doubt ever happens.
