Scouting the SEC: Auburn

For the past handful of drafts, Auburn players have been selected beginning in the third round. With a tip of the hat to consistency, our top two Tigers are graded as third-round prospects.

Two secondary prospects, a senior and a redshirt sophomore, sit on top of our Auburn board.

Scouts grade Stephen Roberts as a late-round pick, but I disagree. The wiry safety is a complete defensive back with next-level ball skills and an appetite for contact. Roberts stays on the receiver's hip out of breaks, has a terrific burst to the ball and effectively plays centerfield or lines up over the slot receiver. Instinctive, he keeps the action in front of him and shows terrific sideline-to-sideline range.

Red-shirt sophomore Javaris Davis flashes big-time ability at cornerback.

He’s a physical corner who locks down opponents and combines ball skills as well as an aggressive nature to defend passes. Davis also comes with a large degree of upside and potential, and I expect a lot of improvement in his game over the next couple of seasons.

The way I feel scouts have underrated Stephen Roberts, I feel they’ve overrated offensive lineman Braden Smith, as some have stamped the tackle as a potential first-round pick.

Smith offers nice size, blocks with proper pad level and has a great head for the position. He makes great use of angles and is very consistent with his hands. He’s a terrific position blocker with the ability to engulf opponents at the point.

What concerns me is his inability to adjust and limited mobility. In my opinion Smith is not a left tackle at the next level and may even struggle holding down the right tackle spot, possibly limiting him to guard.
