Scouting the Rose Bowl: Georgia vs. Oklahoma

The first of two semifinal games matches the stifling Georgia defense against Oklahoma’s high-octane offense. Baker Mayfield will be the focus of attention, but there are plenty of other top-notch pro prospects in this contest.

There is a hot debate in the scouting community as to who’s the better running back prospect from Georgia -- Nick Chubb or Sony Michel. On our board Chubb grades higher, as he’s slightly bigger and slightly faster. Several scouts like Michel’s quickness and burst and grade him higher.

Both are quality next-level prospects, but the workout comparisons between the two will be interesting to watch in the lead up to the draft.

Lorenzo Carter could be one of the most underrated prospects in the draft -- period.

He’s a three-down linebacker with the ability to disrupt the action on the blitz, stuff the run or play in space. The matchup against the Sooners' high-powered offense is a great opportunity for Carter, who will have to make a lot of plays when the ball is in the air.

One of the players he’ll be charged with covering is Mark Andrews, our highest-rated tight end.

Andrews, who’s expected to enter the draft, is everything teams want at the position these days -- a receiver in a tight end's body. Andrews has the speed to split the seam and create mismatches in the secondary. He offers reliable hands and effectively makes the catch on crossing patterns or in the deep field.

Fast times prior to the draft could push Andrews into the late part of Round 1.

One of the most talked-about quarterbacks these days is Baker Mayfield, a prospect who helped his draft stock more than any other player at the position. The senior, graded by scouts as a sixth-round pick entering the season, carried the Sooners on his shoulders at times this year on his way to winning the Heisman Trophy.

Mayfield is accurate, throws a nice deep ball and is always in control of the situation. He’s also short (under 6-foot-1) and plays for a program in a conference that’s never had any long-term successful quarterbacks in the NFL.

People have mentioned Mayfield as the potential first pick of the draft, but that’s crazy talk. Georgia will be a huge challenge for him, as they get a lot of pressure up the field.

His bigger challenge will come later this month when he participates in the Senior Bowl.
