Scouting the Peach Bowl: UCF vs. Auburn

The upstart and unbeaten Central Florida Knights take on Auburn, who knocked Alabama from the top peg of the rankings with a win in the Iron Bowl. The draft board is Auburn-heavy in this contest, though UCF owns a few late-round sleepers who could make next-level rosters.

While the conversation starts with Saquon Barkley when talking about underclassmen running backs, Kerryon Johnson has probably improved his draft stock more than any other ball carrier this season. A part-time starter last year and mid-round choice before the season started, Johnson proved himself to be a feature runner in 2017, carrying the Auburn offense on his shoulders at times.

He’s a big back that pounds opponents on the inside while showing solid short-area quickness. Johnson will enter the draft after the Peach Bowl and projects as a potential late first-round pick.

Opening the running lanes for Johnson will be versatile lineman Braden Smith

Lining up at both tackle spots as well as guard during his Auburn career, Smith is a tough, slug-it-out blocker who plays with great intelligence. Smith grades as a solid second-round pick, but if he participates in the Senior Bowl then shows next-level footwork in pass-protection drills, it’s not out of the possibility Smith slides into the late part of Round 1.

I’m told Jarrett Stidham is considering the draft, and all season long the former Baylor signal caller flashed next-level skills. He’s a strong-armed passer who makes good choices on the field and a quarterback prospect with excellent upside. My hopes are that Stidham stays at Auburn and improves his game which could result in the passer being a top-10 pick in 2019.

I like both of Auburn’s starting cornerbacks, and both offer terrific next-level potential.

Carlton Davis, who most believe will enter the draft, offers solid size and ball skills. Davis is out for the Peach Bowl with an illness and may have played his last game with Auburn during the SEC championship.

Javaris Davis is a little better making plays with his back to the ball but is slightly smaller.
