Scouting the Pac-12: Washington State

Mike Leach has the Washington State program winning again and making appearances in the postseason. And his high-octane offense is run by the top-rated senior quarterback prospect in the nation.

Luke Falk is graded as the No. 1 quarterback prospect from the senior class by a vast majority of scouts. Depending who you speak with, the spread between Falk and Mason Rudolph of Oklahoma State is anywhere from a half-round to almost three full rounds.

In my opinion, Falk is a lesser version of Josh Rosen -- an intelligent, accurate quarterback with the ability to precisely place throws yet a prospect lacking top arm strength. His ability to see the field, read defenses and command the offense ranks with any of the top quarterback prosepcts (Allen, Darnold or Rosen) and in some instances is better. The lack of arm strength is a limiting factor, but Falk can play at the next level in a run-heavy offense that does not rely on the vertical game.

From my point of view, Cody O’Connell is an underrated offensive lineman who does not get enough credit in the scouting community. He’s a massive blocker measuring in at 6-feet-8, 350-plus pounds and plays big football, dominating opponents at the point of attack. He has space limitations and is best in a smaller area, but I fully believe O’Connell can make a next-level roster as a backup guard or tackle.

Finally keep an eye on Hercules Mata’afa, an undersized pass-rushing defensive end who makes a lot of plays in the backfield. Mata’afa is explosive and intense but has size limitations. Projecting him to the next level, the junior is best as a nickel rusher, lining up as a one-gap defensive end or standing over tackle.
