Scouting the MAC - Akron

The Zips made a surprising appearance in the postseason last year after going 6-2 in the MAC. If they end up in the postseason this year it will be in large part due to their defense.

Akron has several next-level prospects on that side of the ball starting with Ulysees Gilbert, an undersized run-and-chase chase linebacker who is constantly around the action. Gilbert makes plays in pursuit as well as in space. While many scouts believe he is a free agent, we’ve stamped Grant as a last-round pick. His 40 time prior to the draft will dictate where he ends up.

Jamal Davis is the player scouts like best on the Akron defense. He’s an undersized pass rusher who can be a disruptive force off the edge. I am concerned as to where Davis projects at the next level, as he lacks the size for defensive end and the speed you want in a pure rusher off the edge.

Kyron Brown is one to keep an eye on in the secondary. He’s a nice-sized corner with solid ball skills who needs to step up the consistency of his game.
