Scouting the Big 12: Oklahoma

Bob Stoops' sudden retirement left OU in a bit of a lurch, and it will be interesting to see the results in 2017. The Sooners last had a first-round pick in 2013, a trend that could change sometime in the next two years.

Oklahoma has placed a number of athletic tight ends into the league, and junior Mark Andrews is shaping up to be one of the best from the program.

The tall pass catcher plays the tight end position like a possession receiver, constantly coming away with contested grabs and getting down the seam to create mismatches in the secondary. He has next-level size and speed numbers and, though blocking is not Andrews' forte, he’s certainly not a liability in that department.

I presently grade him as a late second-round choice but believe he’ll have every opportunity to jump into the draft’s initial 45 selections -- and possibly the first round -- if he continues to improve his game.

Cornerback Jordan Thomas is our highest-rated senior on the Sooners roster and is a shutdown defensive back with next-level ability. Thomas measures just about 6-foot-1, plays fast and possesses next-level ball skills. At times he’s a bit slow reacting to the action, which is worrisome, yet I fully believe he’s a nickel back, if not better, on Sundays.

Redshirt sophomore Neville Gallimore showed flashes of dominance at defensive tackle last season and comes with a large upside. He’s one to monitor moving forward as he gets more on-the-job experience.

I’m a fan of quarterback Baker Mayfield and I like his game. He possesses a next-level arm and a next-level head. Mayfield makes all the passes and spreads the ball around, while his deep arm and accuracy are underrated.

The fact he’ll measure under 6-foot-1 in the lead up to the 2018 NFL Draft will hurt his stock. He’s a signal caller who will be an asset on the sidelines and has enough skill to be a spot starter.
