Scouting the Big 12 – West Virginia

Though they had just a single player selected last year in the fourth round, West Virginia is usually well-represented during the second day of the draft and occasionally places a player in the first round. While the latter won’t happen in 2019, there are some potential top-90 prospects on the Mountaineers depth chart.

The program usually puts a good number of offensive linemen into the NFL, and three of the top four WVU prospects on our board are blockers.

Junior Colton McKivitz is a nice-sized right tackle who blocks with terrific leverage and fundamentals and displays strength at the point of attack. He consistently squares opponents from the action and is big blocker who shows surprising footwork off the edge in pass protection.

Matt Jones is a no-nonsense blocker on the pivot who also plays with solid fundamentals and shows skill blocking in motion. His intensity and blocking vision set him apart.

Yodny Cajuste is well liked in scouting circles but may be better off on the right side or at guard instead of left tackle. Cajuste is not as consistent with his fundamentals compared to his teammates and shows a bit of stiffness in his game.

Quarterback Will Grier made the right call to return for his senior season and could make a big march up draft boards with a big season. Jones has the arm strength and athleticism to produce at the next level and, for the most part, makes good decisions with the football. He must improve his accuracy and pass placement but has upside.

David Sills V is a terrific college receiver who projects well as a No. 4/No. 5 wideout on Sundays. He’s consistent in all areas but lacks speed and quickness and reportedly comes with short arms and small hands, which is not a good combination.
