Scored a conference-best 18 rushing TDs and carried 272 times for 1,496 yards with 28 catches for 402 yards and four TDs as a sophomore. Named Second Team All-Big Ten as a true freshman and started six games, rushing for 1,076 yards and seven touchdowns on 182 carries and catching 20 passes for 161 yards and one score.
Pos:
Complete three-down ball carrier with exciting potential. Displays outstanding vision and instincts and a fluid game. Quick-footed, avoid piles and defenders and effectively uses blocks everywhere on the field. Uses a terrific stutter step to make defenders miss, easily turns the corner and has a burst of speed which allows him to run to daylight. Strings several moves together over the course of a run, loses little momentum changing direction and quickly gets to top speed. Smooth and fluid in all his movements, shows tremendous burst through the hole and turns it on in a single step. Effective receiver out of the backfield and a legitimate downfield passing threat who helps the quarterback sell ball fakes. Game-impacting return specialist.
Neg:
Won’t move the pile or drag defenders. Not a ball carrier you’d use in short-yardage situations.
Analysis:
After two tremendous seasons at Penn State, Barkley heads towards the draft as the top prospect in the event. He’s a complete back who can make defenders miss on the inside, beat them around the corner then run to daylight and make big plays as a pass catcher. He’s instinctive and athletic and has a graceful style to his game. Barkley has the ability to be used in multiple running schemes and should quickly break into a starting lineup at the next level.
