Bio:
Two-year starter who split carries with Joe Mixon in 2016. Named Second Team All-Big 12 after finishing tied for second in the conference with 12 rushing touchdowns and fifth with 1,060 yards on 196 carries despite missing three games with a pulled leg muscle. Earned First Team All-Big 12 and garnered All-American recognition as a sophomore after rushing 226 times for 1,349 yards (third in the Big 12) and pacing the conference with 16 rushing touchdowns. Named Third Team All-American and Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year in 2014 when he led the conference with 263 carries, 1,713 yards and 21 touchdowns.
Pos:
Strong, versatile back with a well-rounded game. Patient, waits for blocks to develop and finds running lanes. Shows a burst through the hole, has quick feet and avoids piles. Keeps his feet moving, breaks tackles and picks up yardage off the initial hit. Displays the agility necessary to turn the corner. Terrific pass catcher out of the backfield. Effectively helps the quarterback sell ball fakes and also does a solid job seeing the blitz and picking up blocking assignments.
Neg:
Must improve his blocking technique. Not a truly creative ball carrier. Shows stiffness in his game. Struggles getting back to balance off the initial hit.
Analysis:
Perine is a physical ball carrier who works hard in all areas of the game but comes with scheme limitations. He’s more of a ground-and-pound running back but in the right system offers potential as a three-down ball carrier.
