Bio:
First-year starter who led USC in rushing in each of his three seasons with the Trojans. Earned First Team All-Pac-12 honors and rushed 261 times for 1,550 yards and 19 touchdowns as a junior. Named Second Team All-Pac-12 and carried 177 times for 1,082 yards and 12 scores while starting the final six games in 2016. Rushed for 987 yards and eight TDs on 153 carries as a true freshman.
Pos:
Explosive ball carrier who picks up big chunks of yardage. Plays with tremendous speed and quickness and has burst through the hole. Beats defenders into the open field and runs to daylight. Displays vision and instincts and is dangerous in the open field. Cuts back against the grain without losing momentum, makes defenders miss and effectively follows blocks everywhere on the field. Plays bigger than his size, uses an effective straight arm to knock defenders away and keeps his feet moving. Gets a lot of momentum going up the field and falls forward when tackled. Solid pass catcher out of the backfield and snatches the ball away from his frame.
Neg:
Lacks great size and does not pick up much yardage off initial contact. May be limited in the number of carries he can handle at the next level.
Analysis:
Jones was a terrific running back at USC and was usually the player who got the offense in motion despite the hype surrounding his quarterback. He’s a big-play ball carrier who can catch passes out of the backfield and will thrive on a rotational basis at the next level.
