Bio:
Two-year starter who leaves Middle Tennessee as the school’s all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns. Played five games and made 31 receptions for 290 yards and five touchdowns as a junior before a broken collarbone ended his season. Earned First Team All-Conference USA and finished second in the conference with 105 receptions in 2016, adding 1,625 yards and 12 touchdowns and an additional 339 yards and four scores on 38 carries. Named First Team All-Conference USA and made a conference-leading 108 receptions as a true freshman for 1,346 yards and eight TDs.
Pos:
Small, shifty receiver with potential as a return specialist. Quickly releases off the line of scrimmage, immediately gets to top speed and sells routes. Comes back to the quarterback to make himself an available target, fights with his hands to separate from defenders and effectively extends to make receptions away from his frame. Nicely adjusts to errant throws and effectively times his pass receptions. Productive running after the catch. Displays tremendous quickness, makes defenders miss in the open field and keeps plays in bounds. Plays bigger than his listed size and competes to come away with difficult catches.
Neg:
Small, slowed by jams at the line of scrimmage and struggles in battles. Average production as a punt returner.
Analysis:
James is a consistent pass catcher who plays tough, fast football. He projects as a slot receiver at the next level, but his greatest contributions must come as a return specialist.
