Bio:
Three-year starter at left guard who earned First Team AP All-America honors in 2017. Named Third Team AP All-America as a junior.
Pos:
Large, dominant blocker with the ability to annihilate defenders. Sets with a wide base, bends his knees and blocks with excellent lean. Mechanically sound, keeps his feet and hands active throughout the action and stays square. Easily controls opponents when engaged at the point of attack, anchors in pass protection and gets movement as a run blocker. Fires into blocks, keeps his head on a swivel and displays solid footwork in space. Plays with a nasty attitude and consistently finishes off opponents.
Neg:
Marginally effective in motion. Not quick if asked to kick out or pull across the line of scrimmage. Late to react to defenders’ moves off the snap.
Analysis:
Nelson has the size, mechanics and smarts to quickly break into a starting lineup as a rookie in the NFL and stay there for a long time to come. He’s dominant in all aspects but is not a good fit for a zone-blocking system.
