Bio:
Three-year starter who played one season at Wisconsin after transferring from Hawaii and sitting out the 2016 season. Earned First Team All-Big Ten honors and led the nation with 21 pass breakups as a junior, adding 35 tackles and a punt-return touchdown. Recorded 53 tackles and 15 pass breakups for the Rainbow Warriors in 2015. Posted 36 tackles and six PBUs as a true freshman.
Pos:
Average-sized defensive back with solid ball skills and the ability to impact games as a return specialist. Remains disciplined with assignments, locates the ball in the air and has a nice break to the throw. Effectively times pass defenses, mixes it up with opponents and has a physical nature to his game. Works to get off blocks and make plays against the run. Effective in zone coverage and backed off the line of scrimmage.
Neg:
Tends to do a lot of grasping and holding, which will turn into penalties at the next level. Lack of height causes mismatches. Often slow to react.
Analysis:
Nelson entered the draft off a solid season, and while he lacks great upside, he has enough skill to be used in dime packages at the next level. His ability to return punts provides added value.
