Bio:
Three-year starter who was named Honorable Mention All-Big Ten in 2016 and 2017. Started 25 consecutive games at left tackle over his final two seasons at Nebraska. Made 10 starts at right tackle as a redshirt freshman and missed three games with a high ankle sprain.
Pos:
Tough, durable college tackle who projects to guard at the next level. Quickly sets up off the snap, keeps his feet moving and makes excellent use of angles and body positioning. Fundamentally sound, works his hands throughout the action and keeps his head on a swivel. Patient in pass protection, explosive at the point and displays outstanding awareness. Stays square, displays better-than-average footwork and blocks with a nasty attitude.
Neg:
Must do a better job consistently bending his knees. Shows some stiffness in his game. Lacks the height and footwork to stay at tackle in the NFL.
Analysis:
Gates is a nice-sized, relatively athletic guard prospect who can be used in a conventional offense or a zone-blocking scheme. He’s a solid prospect who should improve as he physically matures and learns the NFL game.
