Bio:
First-year starter who was named Honorable Mention All-Big 12 and completed 66.5 percent of his passes for 3,963 yards and 33 touchdowns with 10 interceptions in 2017. Spent two years as a backup after transferring from Iowa, where he redshirted the 2013 season.
Pos:
Strong-armed passer who needs a lot of work on his game. Patient in the pocket, effective when he goes through progressions and moves outside the pocket to give himself a better view of the field. Effectively commands the offense and knows where his receivers are on the field. Sits in the pocket and takes big hits to get throws away. Effectively sells ball fakes, takes the safe underneath outlet if nothing else is available and tosses the ball away rather than forcing passes to covered targets. Displays a strong arm and gets the ball through tight windows.
Neg:
Tends to stare down his primary target. Does not consistently drop into the pocket or release the ball with proper footwork. Must improve his pass placement and will miss wide-open targets.
Analysis:
Shimonek displayed flashes of next-level skill last season, the only year he started. He offers good upside but needs work on his game and could be destined for the practice squad.
