NFL Prospect Matchups: Stanford vs. Notre Dame

While it’s not USC-Notre Dame, Stanford has slowly built a rivalry with the Fighting Irish over the past few years. This year’s version of the game has caught the interest of scouts as a number of highly rated and fast-rising players will face off against one another.

Notre Dame has a decided advantage on the line of scrimmage, but the speed of Stanford’s skill players versus the Notre Dame linebackers is the matchup to key on.

Bryce Love may not be having the season he expected, but he will still battle Damien Harris of Alabama for the top running back spot in next year’s draft.

Love is an explosive back with the speed to beat defenders around the perimeter and into the open field and run to daylight. He has an exceptional burst which can be turned on in a single step. He’s also a creative ball carrier who makes defenders miss and improvises when plays break down.

He has next-level hands out of the backfield and is a pass-catching threat.

Threatening opponents as a pass catcher is what tight end Kaden Smith does best.

One of our Week 4 risers is the top tight end prospect in the nation according to scouts, who feel he’ll be the only player at the position selected in Round 1 if he opts for the draft. He’s a terrific athlete with the ability to create mismatches in the middle of the field and in the secondary and catches the ball well.

Stopping the pair falls on the shoulders of Drue Tranquill and Te’Von Coney.

Tranquill is a terrific athlete who makes a lot of explosive plays all over the field. He goes sideline to sideline in pursuit of the action and can be a menace for opponents. His instincts can also be suspect at times.

Though not the same athlete as his teammate, Coney has the necessary computer numbers to play at the next level, and what he lacks in elite foot speed he makes up for with tremendous instincts.

Coney has almost a sixth sense reading then diagnosing plays before they unfold. His ability to cut off the corners when the ball is in Love’s hands or stay downfield and cover Smith when it’s his responsibility will be closely watched by scouts.
