NFL Prospect Matchups: NC State vs. Clemson

Two undefeated ACC teams go head to head on Saturday, and the winner takes the top spot in the Atlantic Division of the conference. There will be a number of battles between NFL prospects on the field, some highly rated as well as a few under-the-radar players.

Clemson had the most dominant defensive line in the country entering the season, possessing four potential first-round picks and a substitute who had late second-day potential. And while they’ve been very good, they have not been the world beaters I predicted over the summer.

North Carolina State has two underrated offensive linemen, starting with left tackle Tyler Jones.

Jones is a relatively athletic college left tackle who I feel will be a good zone-blocking guard at the next level. I stamped him as a third-round prospect, much higher than scouts who feel he’s a better fit in round six.

Somebody is going to look good on Saturday, and Jones will be charged with stopping Clemson’s outstanding pass rushers Clelin Ferrell and Austin Bryant.

Ferrell, who is expected to enter the draft, has six sacks and eight tackles for loss this season. He’s incredibly athletic and besides his pass-rushing skill, Ferrell easily makes plays in space on the ball carrier. I grade him as a top-10 pick for next April.

Bryant, who’s not as athletic or fast, has been slightly disappointing this season. He’s offers size and growth potential but must improve his play against the run.

Wolfpack center Garrett Bradbury is well liked in scouting circles and is graded as a mid-fifth round pick by some area scouts. He’s built low to the ground and gets the most from his ability but he’s not an overpowering blocker.

His task is a tough one, as Bradbury must stop the Tigers duo of Christian Wilkins and Dexter Lawrence.

When on his game Wilkins, is an unstoppable force and a complete three-down lineman. He’s a dominant pass rusher who occupies the gaps or chases the action in pursuit to make plays in space. Wilkins is not always on his game, which is a problem.

Lawrence is bigger and more powerful but slightly overrated in my view. He destroys opponents on occasion, but Lawrence does not play with leverage, which dissipates much of his natural size and power.
