NFL Prospect Matchups: Missouri vs. Alabama

Missouri quarterback Drew Lock draws a variety of opinions in the scouting community, and at present time the opinions are not overwhelmingly positive. This weekend, the senior has the opportunity to change the thinking of scouts.

During my summer preview of Missouri, I mentioned the quandary of scouting Lock, specifically his physical skills versus his passing ability.

At face value, Lock has everything teams want in a starting quarterback in the NFL: size, athleticism and a big-league arm. He can make all the throws, drive the deep pass with speed and get outside the pocket and throw the ball downfield with ease.

His decision-making, accuracy and -- most of all -- pass placement is worrisome at times.

Lock cleaned up early in the season against UT-Martin and Wyoming, but when the competition stiffened, it was a totally different story.

The past two weeks against Georgia and South Carolina, teams with solid defenses, he completed less than 48 percent of his throws and tossed three interceptions and no touchdowns.

The Mizzou schedule goes to a completely different level this week in Tuscaloosa against Alabama.

The Tide has three potential first-round picks on its defensive line and a fast-rising safety who improves weekly.

Raekwon Davis, Isaiah Buggs and Quinnen Williams are all accomplished pass rushers who will be in Lock’s face most of the game. Safety Deionte Thompson is very athletic in center field and has shown significant improvement in his play this year.

This is a chance for Lock to make a statement and prove the Georgia and South Carolina contests were an exception to the rule. If he plays as bad or worse against Alabama, red flags will be raised.
