Bio:
Three-year starter and senior captain named Third Team All-American in 2016, finishing second on the team with 74 tackles in 2016 while adding four interceptions and eight pass breakups. Was suspended for Nebraska’s bowl game after being ruled academically ineligible and was also suspended for the senior opener. Earned Honorable Mention All-Big Ten as both a sophomore and a junior. Started three games at linebacker as a freshman.
Pos:
Explosive and aggressive safety best between the numbers. Effectively reads and diagnoses the action and quickly comes up the field to defend running plays and screen passes. Goes after ball carriers by driving his shoulders through the tackle and wraps up at the point of attack. Picks up coverage assignments, displays good recognition with the ball in the air and plays opportunistic football. Fluid changing direction and displays top quickness in the first five yards.
Neg:
Does not show great range or the ability to quickly get out to the sidelines. One-speed defender who cannot recover from mistakes and does a lot of catching up down the field.
Analysis:
Gerry is a hard-hitting defender who could lineup in a zone system or as a traditional strong safety.
