Bio:
Three-year starter who earned First Team All-SEC honors as both a sophomore and a junior. Made 60 tackles (eight for loss) with one interception, one forced fumble, 1.5 sacks and eight pass breakups as a junior. Led the SEC with six interceptions and matched the team lead with seven PBUs while recording 66 tackles (five for loss), one sack and one forced fumble in 2016. Led Alabama with 11 pass breakups as a true freshman and posted 45 tackles (three for loss), two interceptions and two sacks.
Pos:
Versatile defensive back with tremendous upside. Athletic, explosive and quick. Effective facing the action, explodes to the ball out of his plant and shows a closing burst. Moves with speed both in a straight line and laterally, stays on the receiver’s hip out of breaks and effectively times pass defenses. Quick to read and diagnose the action, instinctive and keeps plays in front of him. Forceful and blows past blocks. Hard hitter who jars the ball loose. Willingly throws his pads around the field and make tackles. Battles receivers throughout the route and sells out to make plays.
Neg:
Slow out of his transition in man-coverage situations. Does a lot of face guarding and struggles to get his head back around to locate the pass. May take a while to develop at one position in the NFL.
Analysis:
Fitzpatrick has the size and speed to line up at multiple spots in the secondary but may need a little time before he’s ready to start on Sundays.
