Bio:
First-year starter who transferred from Garden City Community College after the 2016 season. Earned First Team All-AAC honors as a cornerback and Second Team All-AAC as a returner in 2017 after making 49 tackles, finishing tied for fourth in the conference with four interceptions, breaking up 11 passes and returning three kicks (two kickoffs, one punt) for touchdowns. Started his college career at North Carolina, making 10 tackles with three pass breakups in 11 games as a true freshman in 2015.
Pos:
Tough, aggressive cornerback with terrific ball skills. Quick flipping his hips to transition off the line, strong at the point and mixes it up with receivers throughout their routes. Plays heads-up football, stays on the opponent’s hip out of breaks and tracks the pass in the air. Displays a nice move to the throw, shows an explosive burst out of his plant and competes to break up passes. Quick up the field and gives effort defending running plays and screen passes.
Neg:
Bites on ball fakes. Lacks great height. Enters the draft after just one productive year of big-time college football.
Analysis:
Hughes comes off a terrific 2017 campaign and showed next-level potential every Saturday. He lacks classic height but has enough ball skills to start as a nickel back and can play over the slot receiver and on the flanks.
