Pos:
Tough, competitive safety with a complete game. Full-time starter the past three seasons at Kentucky who played five games with the first team as a freshman. Junior totals of 2017 include a career-best 97 tackles, four interceptions and 11 pass breakups. Physical, instinctive and quick to locate the ball. Hard-hitting, solid open-field tackler who aggressively goes after opponents. Displays a great sense of what's happening on the field, quick to collapse laterally and gives effort against the run. Covers a lot of area, displays burst to the ball out of his plant and quickly closes to the action. Plays faster than his 40 time, works well with cornerbacks and stays with assignments.
Neg:
Tends to overrun plays on occasion and takes himself from the action. Cannot stay on the receiver’s hip out of breaks.
Analysis:
Edwards is an underrated safety who was handed late-round grades by scouts before the season, but he continually shows up on game day in all facets of the defense. He possesses the underlying skills to be used in a variety of alignments and can also line up over the slot receiver without being a liability. I would expect Edwards to be a long-time starter at the next level in the right system.
