Bio:
Junior college transfer who started at left tackle in two of his three seasons at Ole Miss. Earned First Team All-SEC honors despite missing four games with an ankle injury in 2017. Started the final 10 games of his junior season. Redshirted in 2015.
Pos:
Relatively athletic tackle who projects to guard or center at the next level. Bends his knees, blocks with leverage and makes effective use of angles. Patient in pass protection, stays square and works his hand throughout the action. Explosive, has a nice build and controls opponents once engaged. Strong, gets movement as a run blocker and engulfs opponents.
Neg:
Seems to lose a sense of where his quarterback is and does not seem very sure about himself. Lacks footwork off the edge, overall lateral range and blocking balance. Not quick if asked to pull across the line of scrimmage, get out to the second level or block in motion. Tends to fall off blocks rather than finish them.
Analysis:
Rankin has the size and underlying skill to play at the next level but needs a lot of work on his game. Unpolished in just about every sense, he could develop into a starting guard at the next level if properly coached.
