Bio:
Three-year starter who earned Second Team All-Mountain West honors in 2016 after making 58 tackles (three for loss) with one interception and seven pass breakups. Named Honorable Mention All-Mountain West in both 2014 and 2015, posting 77 tackles (five for loss), five interceptions and nine PBUs as a junior and 55 tackles (3.5 for loss), three INTs and five pass breakups in his sophomore season.
Pos:
Tough, run-defending safety with average size and speed numbers. Quick up the field, willingly takes on bigger ball carriers and shows a closing burst. Sells out on the blitz, is relatively instinctive and works well with cornerbacks. Nicely tracks the pass in the air and possesses good hands for the interception.
Neg:
Shows hesitation in his game. Not a secure tackler. Coming off a disappointing season where he did not show much progress in his game.
Analysis:
Entering the year, Smith was graded as a potential late-round pick but really did not improve his game. Off his junior film, Smith displayed all the skills necessary to line up in a zone system but now grades as a prospect who must make a mark on special teams this summer to make a practice squad.
