Bio:
First-year starter who earned numerous All-American accolades in 2016. Tied for third in the nation with seven interceptions, returning three for touchdowns. Made 74 tackles (5.5 for loss) with four pass breakups. Played limited snaps in 13 games as a sophomore in 2015.
Pos:
Developing safety with a complete game. Instinctive, shows great awareness and outstanding ball skills. Tracks the pass in the air and has an explosive closing burst as well as excellent hands for the interception. Athletic, is quick to the flanks and covers a lot of area on the field. Fast moving in every direction, possesses a closing burst and constantly makes positive plays on the ball. Shows the ability to shed blocks and get to the action. Forceful up the field, breaks down well and uses his hands to protect himself. Aggressive but also plays within the system.
Neg:
Lacks a great body of work and only started for a single season. Off-season hernia surgery forced him to miss the combine.
Analysis:
Hooker is a developing defensive back with a terrific game and a tremendous upside. He’s a complete three-down defender that can roam centerfield covering the pass or quickly make his way downhill to stop the run or blitz the quarterback. The off-season surgery is a speed bump in the road but, if properly coached, Hooker offers All-Pro potential at the next level.
