Bio:
Two-year starter at Virginia after transferring from East Carolina. Became the first Virginia quarterback to throw for 3,000 yards in a season in 2017, completing 58.5 percent of his passes for 3,207 yards, 25 touchdowns and nine interceptions and earning an invitation to the Senior Bowl. Threw for 2,552 yards and 21 touchdowns as a junior, completing 56.2 percent of his passes and throwing 11 interceptions. Missed the 2015 season with a knee injury suffered in August camp before transferring.
Pos:
Solid game manager who throws with accuracy. Effectively commands and controls the offense and displays a sense of timing on passes. Stands in the pocket and gets pummeled to get throws away. Consistently places passes where his receivers have a chance to make receptions. Quick-footed, easily avoids the rush and buys time for receivers. Goes to checkdown targets if nothing else is available. Effectively sets up screen throws. Displays excellent velocity on his short and intermediate throws.
Neg:
Take some unnecessary chances and forces passes to covered targets. Does not always release the ball with proper footwork. Slow going to secondary targets.
Analysis:
Benkert comes off a terrific senior campaign and offers decent upside, but in the end he may be nothing more than a career backup.
