Bio:
Three-year starter who was named Honorable Mention All-Conference USA and made 96 tackles (4.5 for loss) with two interceptions, one forced fumble and two pass breakups in 2017. Earned Second Team All-Conference USA honors and led North Texas with 91 tackles (five for loss) while adding three interceptions, two forced fumbles and three PBUs as a junior. Finished with a team-high 110 tackles (2.5 for loss) and posted one interception, two forced fumbles and three pass breakups in 2015. Made 39 tackles with one interception as a true freshman.
Pos:
Hard-working safety best playing downhill. Remains disciplined with assignments, plays heads-up football and quickly makes his way up the field to defend screen passes and run plays. Squares and wraps up tackling. Quick flipping his hips to transition with opponents off the line, effectively diagnoses the action and possesses good hands for the interception.
Neg:
Lacks speed out to the flanks. Shows just average quickness. Inefficient and takes unnecessary steps to the action. Average size.
Analysis:
McClain lacks next-level size and speed but is a tough run defender with solid ball skills. He has an outside shot to make it as a dime back if he plays well on special teams.
