Bio:
Three-year starter who earned First Team All-Mountain West in his first season at cornerback and made 68 tackles (five for loss) with three interceptions, two sacks, two forced fumbles and eight pass breakups in 2017. Recorded 38 tackles, five interceptions and six PBUs as a junior. Posted 58 tackles (three for loss), two interceptions and three pass breakups in 2015.
Pos:
Versatile defensive back with a good head for the position. Reads the action, stays with assignments and plays heads-up football. Effectively works with teammates to bracket receivers over the middle of the field, shows good anticipation and has a burst to the ball out of his plant. Stays with receivers laterally on crossing patterns, tracks the pass in the air and effectively positions himself to defend the throw. Sells out on the blitz and gives effort against the run.
Neg:
Slow out of his transition. Does not always play with balance. Deep speed is a big red flag.
Analysis:
Kelly was a productive defensive back who lined up at both cornerback and safety. He offers potential in a zone system where he can face the action and be protected.
