Pos:
Undersized run-and-chase linebacker who has been a tackling machine for Oklahoma State. Breaks down well, effectively uses his hands and fights hard to get off blocks and make plays. Remains disciplined with assignments, quickly reads and diagnoses the action and sells out to make plays. Keeps the action in front of him, displays terrific awareness in coverage and gets depth on pass drops. Fires up the field to defend the run, flows well laterally and makes plays out to the flanks. Displays good change of direction and burst to get to the ball carrier. Squares and wraps up tackling.
Neg:
Average ball skills. Not a stout open-field tackler. Lack of height results in mismatches against taller tight ends.
Analysis:
Phillips entered the season graded as a potential late-round choice, and he has all the tools necessary to back up at inside linebacker in a 3-4 alignment. He plays with a special-teams mentality, which is added value.
