Bio:
Three-year starter who earned First Team All-AAC honors in each of his final two seasons with the Mustangs. Led the AAC with 9.5 sacks in 2017, tied for the team lead with 15.5 tackles for loss and made 74 tackles. Finished first on the team with 15 tackles for loss and six sacks as a junior and posted 65 tackles. Led SMU with 64 tackles and five sacks in 2015 and added nine tackles for loss.
Pos:
Game-disrupting pass rusher who was productive and durable. Intense, plays with a nasty, aggressive attitude and chases the action hard. Fires off this snap with a tremendous first step, keeps his feet and hands active throughout the action and slices through double-team blocks to penetrate the line of scrimmage. Breaks down well and plays with excellent knee bend and outstanding balance. Agile, shows good change of direction and the ability to immediately alter his angle of attack.
Neg:
Has a thin build. Easily disrupted from his angle of attack and knocked from the play by the initial hit. Primarily came out of a three-point stance for SMU and has limited experience playing in space.
Analysis:
Entering the season, Lawler was graded as a street free agent by NFL scouts despite a terrific campaign in 2016. He’s a disruptive pass rusher who must get stronger and improve his run defense, but he offers possibilities as a third-down pass rusher who can come out of a three-point stance or occasionally stand over tackle at the next level.
