Bio:
Three-year starter who made 47 tackles with two interceptions and six pass breakups despite missing three games with a hamstring injury in 2017. Posted 66 tackles (three for loss), one interception and a team-high 11 pass breakups as a junior. Named Honorable Mention All-Big Ten and recorded 75 tackles (five for loss), three interceptions and seven PBUs in 2015. Started two games as a true freshman and made 27 tackles with one interception, two forced fumbles and three pass breakups.
Pos:
Versatile defensive back who has lined up at both cornerback and safety. Displays a good head for the ball, takes proper angles to the action and sells out to make plays. Effectively picks up coverage assignments, plays heads-up football and quickly moves up the field to defend screen passes and run plays. Explosive at the point and wraps up tackling. Shows a closing burst of speed and solid ball skills.
Neg:
Struggled at safety as a senior and lacks top lateral range and speed out to the flanks. Slow flipping his hips in transition.
Analysis:
Kalu looked like an up-and-coming cornerback prospect after his sophomore and junior seasons but took a step back as a senior when he was moved inside to safety. He showed well during Shrine Game practices and possesses the dimensions and skill to line up in dime packages at the next level.
