Bio:
Three-year starter who led Iowa in tackles in each of those three seasons. Earned unanimous First Team All-America honors and posted 136 tackles, a team-high 13.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, two interceptions and 11 pass breakups in 2017. Was named Second Team All-Big Ten and made 124 tackles (six for loss) with 1.5 sacks and a team-high nine PBUs as a junior. Earned Second Team All-Big Ten honors and tallied 126 tackles (7.5 for loss), 2.5 sacks, four interceptions and six pass breakups in 2015. Started four games as a redshirt freshman and made 51 tackles (one for loss) with one sack.
Pos:
Incredibly productive linebacker who is more of a two-down defender. Instinctive, remains disciplined with assignments and quickly locates the action. Smooth scraping laterally and displays outstanding instincts and effective pursuit skills to run down ball carriers from the back side. Does not bite on ball fakes, rarely makes mental errors and is constantly in the right place at the right time. Possesses almost a sixth sense as to what’s going to happen on the field. Fluid changing direction, works hard and plays tough, nasty football. Squares into ball carriers and wraps up tackling. Breaks down well and effectively uses his hands to protect himself. Efficient and takes proper angles to the action.
Neg:
Possesses playing speed rather than 40 speed and struggles to stay downfield with tight ends and running backs in coverage. Lack of height limits his growth potential.
Analysis:
Though Jewell may not have classic size and speed, he’s a tremendous football player with an outstanding head for the game. He stacks well against the run and runs down ball carriers in pursuit, and he will be a solid addition on first and second down and brings a lot of leadership skills.
