Bio:
Three-year starter named First Team All-Big 12 after finishing fourth in the conference with 101 tackles, adding 5.5 for loss and three interceptions. Ranked third in the conference with 108 tackles as a junior and added two interceptions to earn Second Team All-Big 12 honors. Led the team in tackles for three straight seasons, making 103 (5.5 for loss) in 2014 with two forced fumbles.
Pos:
Underrated safety who flies around the action giving effort. Fires up the field, willingly defends the run and wraps up tackling. Displays terrific timing and anticipation, displays above-average range and gets out to the flanks to make plays. Instinctive, quickly reads the action and works well with cornerbacks.
Neg:
Lacks a quick burst to the ball and cannot drive to the throw out of his plant. Does not always take proper angles and shows some inefficiency.
Analysis:
Stearns is a tough, run-defending safety who can hold his own in zone coverage. He offers possibilities as a ninth defensive back and special-teams player.
