Bio:
Three-year starter named First Team All-Big 12 in 2016 after making 98 tackles (10 for loss) with four interceptions and 2.5 sacks. Earned Second Team All-Big 12 honors as a junior with 83 tackles (five for loss), one sack, one forced fumble and four pass breakups while missing two games with a shoulder injury. Recorded 93 tackles (6.5 for loss) with one interception and two forced fumbles in 2014.
Pos:
Underrated linebacker with a versatile game who is moving up draft boards. Remains disciplined with assignments, doesn’t bite on play-action passes or ball fakes and gets depth on pass drops. Effectively reads the quarterback’s eyes, shows an explosive burst to the action and is very effective in zone coverage. Breaks down well, gives outstanding effort and defeats blocks getting to the action. Plays fast, goes sideline to sideline and covers a good amount of area on the field. Aggressively defends the run, willingly throws his pads into the pile and sacrifices his body to make the stop. Plays tough, smart football and effectively anticipates the action.
Neg:
Lacks great bulk and strength at the point. Had marginal production until his senior season. Average skill in man coverage and looks strictly like a zone defender.
Analysis:
Evans is a hard-working and underrated linebacker who has watched his draft stock take off since September. Originally graded by scouts as a street free agent, he has a real chance to be a late-round selection and find a home at the next level as a sixth or seventh linebacker and special teams player.
