Bio:
Two-year starter who earned First Team All-AAC honors in 2017 after catching 32 passes for 515 yards and four touchdowns. Made 23 receptions for 347 yards as a junior in 2016. Missed all but two games of his sophomore season due to a knee injury. Was part of UCF’s 2010 signing class, but played professional baseball for four seasons after the Texas Rangers drafted him in the third round of the 2010 MLB Draft
Pos:
Nice-sized, efficient tight end with a baseball background. Smoothly releases off the line of scrimmage, sells routes and shows good change of direction. Consistent hands catcher who extends to grab passes away from his frame. Fluid on crossing patterns, works to make himself an available target and gives effort blocking. Gets vertical and extends in order to come away with receptions.
Neg:
Displays average quickness and speed. Gives effort blocking but lacks finishing strength.
Analysis:
Akins was a solid tight end at the college level but lacks any great physical traits to his game. He’s efficient in all areas and could find a roster spot as a third tight end.
