Bio:
Four-year starter who earned Second Team All-Conference USA honors after catching 42 passes for 506 yards and four touchdowns in 2016. Missed time after suffering severe burns when his girlfriend poured boiling water on him. Made 36 receptions for 397 yards and four touchdown in 2015 before his season ended with a torn ACL. Named First Team All-Conference USA as a sophomore after setting career highs across the board with 61 receptions, 710 yards and eight touchdowns. Honorable Mention All-Conference USA as a true freshman, making 39 catches for 388 yards and two scores.
Pos:
Exceptional pass-catching tight end with a large amount of upside. Quick, plays faster than his 40 time and presents himself as a solid athlete. Fluid releasing into pass routes, uses his frame to shield defenders or protect the pass and nicely adjusts to catch the errant throw in stride. For the most part makes the reception with his hands away from his frame. Blocks with solid fundamentals, fires off the snap and is explosive at the point. Gives effort blocking.
Neg:
Lacks overall blocking strength, struggles to finish off opponents and falls off blocks. Lazily lets the ball inside him on occasion and does not always snatch the ball away from his frame.
Analysis:
Smith is an underrated move tight end prospect who flashed outstanding athleticism during Senior Bowl week. He must improve his playing strength as well as the consistency of his pass-catching fundamentals but is a last-day choice who should produce at the next level as a second tight end.
