Bio:
Two-year starter who began his career at cornerback before moving to safety. Started 13 games at free safety as a senior and led the team with three interceptions, ranked second with 77 tackles (2.5 for loss) and added nine pass breakups, a sack and one forced fumble. Started nine games at strong safety and three at corner in 2015, posting 63 tackles, three interceptions, two forced fumbles and three pass breakups.
Pos:
Productive run-defending safety who flashes skill against the pass. Instinctive, remains disciplined with assignments and displays good awareness. Makes the defensive calls in the secondary, shows a nice sense of timing on pass defenses and does a terrific job picking up assignments. Quick up the field defending the run and a secure tackler who squares into ball carriers. Possesses a burst to the action out of his plant, is willing to mix it up and possesses solid ball skills. Tracks the pass in the air then contorts to defend or intercept the throw. Good job knowing where receivers are on the field.
Neg:
Not a real rangy safety who covers a lot of area. Average size/speed numbers. Lacks a great burst or elite speed.
Analysis:
Johnson often gets lost in the shuffle at the safety position yet could be a steal on the draft’s final day. He’s a complete player at the position and would be very effective in a zone system.
